The Sunset Valley Savanna Trail at Upper Cougar Creek is a transformative project designed to create an accessible pathway connecting the Sunset Valley Homestead Shopping Center and Ernest Robles Way. This trail will feature seating, nature play areas, environmental art, and riparian restoration, forming a beautiful and functional space for the community. As Phase 1 of a larger multi-phase initiative, it represents the first step toward a vibrant park in the heart of Sunset Valley.

Current Progress

Construction on the Savanna Trail is nearing completion. The concrete section of the trail has been installed, and landscaping efforts will soon begin. Following the landscaping, the final granite section of the trail will be added. While the trail may appear ready for use, it remains closed to pedestrian traffic as enhancements are finalized.

Ernest Robles Way Project

The trail’s opening is contingent on completing the related project along Ernest Robles Way, began on January 6, 2025. This project includes:

  • Repairs to the bridge
  • Installation of two raised crosswalks
  • Replacement of damaged concrete sections

To ensure safety and efficiency, sections of Ernest Robles Way will temporarily close with traffic detoured around the area. This approach, recommended by City Staff and the Public Works Committee, minimizes construction time, enhances safety for both drivers and crews, and reduces confusion compared to maintaining two-way traffic. Shopping centers were consulted, and the project timeline was carefully planned to begin after the holiday season.

Looking Ahead

Once both projects are complete, the City will host a grand opening celebration for the Savanna Trail, anticipated in early spring 2025. This new trail will offer a safer and more enjoyable experience for pedestrians and contribute to the long-term vision of a thriving park space.
